An unmistakable presence in the Maremma landscape is Mount Amiata, the only true mountain in Southern Tuscany and, with its 1736 metres of height, the tallest extinct volcano in Italy. Covered by thick woods, Mount Amiata offers a web of itineraries for excursionists and mountain bikers, both on the Grossetan and Sienese versants. The best known trail is the "Ring of the Mountain", a 24-kilometre-long path all around the Amiata across chestnut and beech woods at a height of around 1000-1300 metres above sea level. Another pleasant trail goes along the solitary valley of the Albegna river, from Roccalbegna to the picturesque village of Rocchette di Fazio. A wilder itinerary with breathtaking vistas leads from Arcidosso to Mount Labbro, just south of the Amiata.
