The graduates of scientific faculties are the most requested by the Lombard job market: only 3 out of 10 demands for electronic and statistic engineers can be satisfied. The former students of political and social branches of learning, face more difficulties when looking for work: in particular, the offer of law and architecture graduates is twice as big as the real need. It emerges from a survey on the regional labour market carried out by Formaper, the Special Company of Milano's Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Job Market Observatory of Milano's provincial government.
In 2006, the Lombard universities' graduates were 46,000 (almost 35,000 in Milano), 33,000 of which began to work immediately. The most popular school is Economics (16.2%), then come political sciences and sociology (11.8%), architecture (7.8%), law (7.5%) and industrial engineering (4.7%).
Exactly engineers, and in general those who graduate in the scientific and maths area, would enjoy the best employment opportunities. 4,493 the engineers who graduated between 2006 and 2007, 8,244 those who are demanded by public and private companies. In the case of statistic engineers, the lack is even deeper: 1,172 against 4,043. Something similar happens with pharmaceutical chemistry students: 714 against 1,522. Nevertheless, the offer is not adapting itself to this trend.
As a matter of fact, young people in Lombardia go on having a predilection for arts faculties (which offer good job perspectives) and above all for two schools that have been showing many difficulties from this point of view: law and architecture. As for the former, in 2006 the graduates were 2,265, against a 993 people demand, less than half of the total amount. Architecture schools churned out 2,214 new graduates, while the requests were 1,129.
The Milanese labour market is particularly dynamic towards graduates. Among the 12,046 youth who ended their studies in 2006, 8,234 found a job by the end of the following year. An overwhelming majority of the Milanese former students was hired with a temporary contract (76.6%), 17.3% got an open-ended contract, while 8.1% undertook the entrepreneurial activity.
