GREENAWAY WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM ON THE ORIGINAL 'LAST SUPPER'

The Ministry for Cultural Goods gave its authorization

Peter Greenaway will be able to display his performance of lights projections and sounds on the original 'Last Supper' by Leonardo Da Vinci in the Milanese church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It was Milano's councillor for Culture Vittorio Sgarbi to announce it at the end of the audition in front of the commission of the Ministry for Cultural Goods he took part in last Friday together with the English director.

"After over an hour of arguments through which I explained that from a technical point of view these lights don't do any damage to the work of art" claimed the art critic "I managed to overcome the oppositions, so Greenaway's installation has been authorised for a night on the original". Over the past few weeks, the Ministry's panel had denied the execution of the show by affirming that it could aggravate the fresco's already bad conditions.

The decision on the performance's date is now up to Cosmit (Comitato Organizzatore del Salone del Mobile Italiano), the Milanese trade show organisation that financed the arrival of Greenaway's clone at Palazzo Reale, where it should remain until May 4th. Councillor Sgarbi, however, has suggested a protraction of the installation until next September, although the restoration of the Sala delle Cariatidi was due to begin in a short time. "I'm sure that the restoration" assures Sgarbi "won't start before the end of September".
