RIDING AROUND THE EVENTS OF 2008 'FUORISALONE'

40 bikers suggest how it feels going through the 'design streets'

Also this year, the Fuorisalone is giving life to hundreds of events related to the Salone del Mobile, the international exhibition of domestic furnishing that ends on Monday. A very good way to move from one happening to the other by avoiding traffic and overcrowded transports is the bicycle, which is environmental-friendly too. However, Milano has still a long way to go in order to make its streets fully suitable for the two wheels. That's why the municipal committee for Mobility, Transports and Environment has launched a new initiative to improve this front.

Every day until next Monday, 40 bikers selected by association Ciclobby ride the city streets and have the job of suggesting, through a questionnaire, both the positive elements and the potential critical situations faced along their itinerary. The routes chosen are those hosting the highest number of events inside Fuorisalone (for example Brera and Tortona neighborhoods). The starting point is at Università Statale. Here people collect their maps and, of course, their bikes, which have been customized by young designers to celebrate the design week.

However, the initiative is open to all the citizens who want to take part in it with their own bikes, because the aim is clearly to involve Milanese people and make them aware of sustainable mobility, which is becoming a key issue at a global level. Besides, the survey (which might be repeated in the next few months), it will help institutions to analyze the state of the city viability from the bikers' point of view.
