There's still a glimmer of hope to see Peter Greenaway's performance in Santa Maria delle Grazie church, where the original 'Last Supper' by Leonardo da Vinci is housed. Until next Monday, the English director is taking a clone of the painting to the Sala delle Cariatidi in Palazzo Reale, whose beauty and complexity are emphasized by lights' projections and sounds.
It was Milano's councillor for Culture, Vittorio Sgarbi, to announce that on Friday 18th he will take part with Greenaway in an audition in front of the commission of the Ministry for Cultural Goods. The panel has frequently denied the execution of the show inside the church's refectory because, according to its experts' opinion, it could aggravate the fresco's already bad conditions due to the over exposition to light during the ordinary daily visitors' tours. "It is a lie which has been spread by incompetent people" claimed councilor Sgarbi "All the analysis have proved that no damage could be done by this performance".
A more concrete scenario concerns the possibility to extend the presence of Greenaway's work at Palazzo Reale, although the restoration of the Sala delle Cariatidi should begin in short time. The author is confident: "This could be a great opportunity for thousands of people to see Leonardo's masterpiece, as we know that the access to the original refectory is not easy at all".
