A piece of Milano is on display in New York. 'La Domenica del Corriere', the legendary weekly which was created as a supplement of Milanese daily newspaper 'Corriere della Sera', is the protagonist of an exhibition cured by Giovanna Ginex that takes place at the Italian Institute (686 Park Avenue) from April 10th to May 9th. 'La Domenica del Corriere' was created in 1899 as a picture paper: its cover was entrusted to young designer Achille Beltrame, who described the most important event of the week through a drawing.
Thanks to its illustrations, the weekly soon became extremely successful: in 1936 it printed 1,450,000 copies. During the Fifties and Sixties, the arrival of television took the publication to a gradual but unstoppable crisis, until the definitive closedown of 1989. Today, the early copies are sought by thousand of collectors.
The comic pages showed in New York offer a taste of the Italian illustrations through the work of six artists, selected among the over 350 who collaborated for the paper during its 90 year-long history (Achille Beltrame, Walter Molino, Giorgio De Gaspari, Mario Tempesti, just to name a few) and through the first page happenings and news stories: wars, sport, entertainment, costume.
With over 100,000 comic pages, the section 'Drawings and graphic documentation' of the historical archive of Corriere della Sera, which is preserved by its own Foundation, is the biggest collection of original materials in the field of Italian periodical editorial production.
