Encouraging the knowledge of the Arena Civica and at the same time of Milano. These are the aims of an original project that involves the polytechnic school for tourism 'Artemisia Gentileschi'. From April 12th to May 18th, every Saturday and Sunday from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will turn into tourist guides and will accompany the public in the discovery of an often neglected monument.
It was the city council's committee for Sports and Leisure that asked the institute to take part in the initiative. Anna Gagliano, who both teaches Tourist Disciplines and is responsible for the school's communication and image, conceived and coordinated the plan in order to make it useful for her pupils too. 14 young guides from 15 to 19 years old were chosen among over 40 students: selections were based on an art history test and on the candidate's communicative skills.
Tours (which will be free) will be everything but traditional, as the plain description of the Arena's beauties will be livened by many surprises: some of the historical characters mentioned by guides will suddenly enter the scene and add a theatrical accent. For the students this will be a unique chance: "It is a significant educational and professional experience, a difficult challenge" explains Gagliano "We hope that participants will develop a strong sense of belonging to their school and their city and that their love for arts will grow".
The Arena, which is located in Sempione Park, was realised by architect Luigi Canonica at the beginning of the 19th century as a big building for celebrations, shows and tournaments. Throughout the years, sport events have become the main reason of prestige: this project will try to remind Milanese people and tourists the Arena's cultural, artistic and historical heritage.
