170 wineries from Lombardia are going to participate in the 42nd edition of Vinitaly, the largest wine show in the world which will take place in Verona next week (April 3rd - 7th). These cellars will offer a sample of the region's annual production of about 85 millions of bottles Doc (a Denominazione di Origine Controllata, wines produced in specific well-defined regions, according to specific rules designed to preserve the traditional wine-making practices of the individual regions) and Docg (a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, even more specific than Doc), result of 24 thousands hectares of registered land.
These numbers have been reported by president of the region Lombardia, Roberto Formigoni and vice-president and councilor for agriculture Viviana Beccalossi during the presentation of 'Lombardia's wines at Vinitaly 2008' which took place today at Pirelli skyscraper, the region's seat. 'Our way of making wine - explains Formigoni - is defined by specific systems of production with clear and accurate rules. There is a path that starts from vineyards and reaches the citizens' bottles and tables: it gives certainties also for what concerns food safety'.
Pinot Neri of Oltrepò Pavese, Lambruschi Mantovani, Chiaretti of Garda, white wines of the Valcalepio and reds of San Colombano are a few renowned regional wines. 'These products - adds Beccalossi - go on surprising and gathering consents both on a national and international level. They have been the pacesetters for other realities of Lombardia that nowadays are claiming great success'.
