POLARIS CENTRE: SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR CAMATINI EXPLAINS GOAL

The center will provide institutions comprehensive data

A new model which integrates scientific skills from the biological, epidemiological, physical and medical fields with the objective of channelling new environmental policies, both local and governmental. With this aim, the new research center "Polaris" ((Polveri in Ambiente e Rischio per la Salute) was inaugurated at the Bicocca University. The goal is to better investigate the impact of the particles in the air on human health.

"There are no other similar centres in Italy" explained scientific director Marina Camatini, also lecturer in Cell biology at the Bicocca University. Among other organisms who participate in the research project are the Università Statale of Milano, the San Paolo Hospital, always in Milano, and the University of Siena in Tuscany.

"Our objective - said Camatini - is to provide the government and local administrations more objective and comprehensive data on the presence of particles in the environment. The core issue here is that each area is characterized by specific and unique elements which in turn affect the air quality. Hence, in order to be effective, environmental policies must take into account the different geographical characteristics for instance between Milano and Naples, as well as the sources of gas emissions which vary from area to area, these being vehicles, traffic, fuel, wear and tear on tyre, heating and so forth" added Camatini.

"We hope, within three years, to be able to provide institutions complete and detailed results, obviously it's then up to politics to implement the most appropriate guidelines" said Camatini, critical towards the Milano Ecopass measure introduced by the city Municipality at the beginning of the year. "Had it been implemented as it was intended originally, then it would have been effective in significantly reducing pollution; however due to political pressure and to lobbying the measure was watered down and has proven to be unsuccessful".

According to Polaris scientific director in fact the closure of Milano's tiny city center to the most polluting vehicles has only increased traffic and hence pollution in the areas surrounding the center. "An effective measure - explained Camatini - would be to forbid all vehicles to enter the center and improve public transport".
