MUNICIPALITY OUTLINES SCHOOL CAMPAIGN TO TACKLE DRUG USE

The project launched by Health and School and Family Departments

A global approach to tackle drug consumption among school students. This is the objective of a project launched by the Milano Municipality and in particular by the Family, School and Social Policies Department, led by Mariolina Moioli, and the Health Department headed by Giampaolo Landi di Chiavenna and presented this morning in the Municipalities headquarters, at Palazzo Marino.

As part of the campaign the Municipality has delivered to all families of Milano with children between 13 and 16 year old, considered the most critical age in terms of first time drug consumption, a letter containing information on the new initiative.

The campaign gives schools a fundamental role: students, teachers and staff are all involved. Each school will guarantee the presence of a health national public service expert who will be able to give advice and carry out a prevention plan.

In addition the Municipality has provided 360 chemists spread around the city of specific anti-drugs tests which can detect the presence of six different drugs in the blood, which as the Health Councillor of the Municipality Giampaolo Landi di Chiavenna explained can be used as an important "starting point" or "dialogue tool" considering a communication breakdown is usually one of the first symptoms associated with drug consumption and drug abuse.

As Mariolina Moioli, City Town Family, School and Social Policies Councillor explained, the real objective of the project is the re-integration in a working and social context of drug abusers, which remains one of the most delicate aspects of rehabilitation.
