The absurd and sometimes surreal characters made from objects found such as belts or medals by Milanese artist Enrico Baj are on exhibit at the Fondazione Marconi until the 15th of March.
Italian artist and art writer, Baj was close to the surrealist and Dada movements, and was later associated with pop art. In 1951 he founded the "arte nucleare" movement with Sergio D'Angelo, which was characterized by a strong political approach. Baj himself was aligned with the anarchist movement.
His most well-known pieces are probably the series of "Generals" which will be on exhibit at the Fondazione Marconi. In his last years he created a series of paintings in sign of protest to Silvio Berlusconi's election.
He was born into a wealthy family in Milan, but left Italy in 1944. He studied law at the Milano University and the Brera Academy of Art. He died in Vergiate, Italy, in 2003.
