Ecopass: Mayor Moratti reveals first figures

Pm 10 down by 30 per cent

Mayor of Milano Letizia Moratti, was in Bruxelles to launch the "European Mayors Alliance", the agreement sealed between Mayors of European cities on environment, renewable energy and energetic efficiency issues. Here she revealed the first figures regarding the effects of the Ecopass - the transit pass necessary to enter the city center introduced at the beginning of 2008.

According to the first reports the presence of PM 10 has been reduced by 30 per cent. The number of daily vehicles that access the city center, which used to be 170 thousand, has been cut down to 133 thousand.

"In addition to this - explained Mrs Moratti - we must add the increase (plus 20 thousand per day) in the use of public transport on behalf of the citizens, which has had a positive effect on the number of accidents within the city". The Mayor of Milano explained that if the trend is confirmed in the next few months, the Ecopass will be implemented in the coming years.
