MORATTI IN BRUXELLES FOR THE "EUROPEAN MAYORS ALLIANCE"

The Mayor: praises efforts to turn Milano into a "green city"

"The city of Milano strives to be increasingly earth friendly, and for this reason it has embarked on a challenging project made up of shared and concrete actions". Today, mayor of Milano Letizia Moratti praised the launch of the "Mayor's Pact" an alliance sealed between Mayors of European cities on environment, renewable energy and energetic efficiency issues. The signing of the agreement took place in Brussels with the approval of the European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs. The alliance is not only supported by Letizia Moratti, but also by the Mayors of London, Helsinki, Ljubljana, Lyon, Madrid and Riga.

The city of Milano, which adhered to the "Covenant of Mayors" when it was first launched, will further develop its 2020 goals in terms of the criterion set by the Eu, reducing by over 20% the CO2 emissions. The plan includes more energetic efficiency, an increase in the use of renewable energy, more adequate communication activities, and the development of large scale sustainable urban areas with a particular focus on citizen's mobility. Within this framework the city has already adopted special measures encouraging the civil society to take part in the action plan.

"We are very happy to be able to offer Milano as a reference model for the rest of the country and at an international level in this particular area, in line with the most advanced European guiding lines" added Mrs Moratti underlying the value of such an achievement in prospect of the Expo 2015 bid: "an international event which will have zero impact on the environment thanks to sophisticated measures and technological innovations" explained the Mayor.
