An exchange between cities and the private sector to support action on resource efficiency: with this goal the initiative Slimcity was launched by Mayors, regional governors and the private sector during the the World Economic Forum in Davos. Areas of action include energy, water, waste, mobility, planning, health and climate change.
The initiative was presented by Mayor of Milan Letizia Moratti and Mayor of London Ken Livingstone. "It is a strategic alliance between cities of the whole world and between public and private sector aimed at fighting the same battle in favour of the environment, the climate, a truly sustainable development, access to safe food and drinkable water for all" explained Mrs Moratti. "Cities must learn to exchange their know how, confront each other on shared projects, it is becoming more and more crucial" she added. "The common objective is to guarantee the citizens better services and a better quality of life" she concluded.
"I believe that as leaders of major cities, our involvement in the World Economic Forum can help to push the global agenda strongly in favour of cities so that we can act decisively on climate change and other crucial issues" said London Mayor Ken Livingstone. "Through the SlimCity initiative, myself and other city leaders can inform business leaders of how they can assist in helping cities achieve their full potential" he added.
SlimCity is a partnership between the World Economic Forum, the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, and ICLEI, the global city network.
