MILAN'S POLYCLINIC MOST CITED IN SCIENTIFIC REPORTS

Leader in research among Italian public health care structures

The Milan Polyclinic - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico-Mangiagalli-Regina Elena - is first among the Italian public health institutes in terms of the number of times it is quoted in scientific papers. A record that should be confirmed in the latest 2007 ranking. The announcement was made by the President of the homonymous Foundation, Carlo Tognoli, during the 2005-2007 sanitary scientific activity presentation.

Among private institutes, the "Policlinico" is second only to another milanese hospital, the "San Raffaele". It is a "miracle come true" said the hospital's scientific manager Ferruccio Bonino, explaining that the leadership was achieved in a period spanning over three years in which the General Hospital changed its legal status, merged with the adjacent institutes (Mangiagalli and Regina Elena) and implemented a renovation plan which will be completed by end of 2011.

The new legal status has enabled additional funding (about ten million euros in three years) assigned specifically to biomedical research with a strong commitment to the potential use of staminal cells.

The renovation plan of the hospital premises will double the emergency room which will have four new operating theatres. The Monteggia pavilion will be completed by the end of next summer and will be functional by 2008 when the Ponti, Moneta, Beretta Est and Beretta Neuro pavilions will be demolished.
